The goal is to use inductive reasoning to make conjectures. Some of the time you will you will be given a series of numbers and asked to find the next few numbers in the series, then explain how you found them. The other times you will be given a sentence with some information, based on that sentence you will have to write a conjecture.

Inductive Reasoning
Coming to a conclusion or making a prediction based
on a pattern you observe.

Conjecture
A conclusion reached by using inductive reasoning or
to come to a conclusion based on incomplete information.

Example:

"Every time you eat shrimp, you get cramps. Therefore you get cramps because you eat shrimp."

Example:

"Midbsdkhail is from Russia and Russians are tall, therefore Midbsdkhail is tall."

Example:

"Bob plays soccer, therefore bob likes soccer."

Example:

"The women in the neighboring apartment has a shrill voice can hear it from outside, therefore the women in the neighboring apartment is loud."

Example:

1 + 3 = 4
1 + 3 + 5 = 9
1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16
1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 25

Practice:

1)1,3,5,7...
Find the next three numbers in the series then explain how you found them.
2)-1,2,0,3,1...
Find the next three numbers in the series then explain how you found them.
3)1/2,1/4,1/8,1/16...
Find the next three numbers in the series then explain how you found them.
4)-1,2,-4,8...
Find the next three numbers in the series then explain how you found them.

What can you conclude:
1) The boys basketball team is short, I am on the boys basketball team.
2)Honors kids are smart, James is not in honors classes.
3)If we get over 8 in. of snow school is closed, last night we received 6in.
